We have lots of rhetoric and chest-beating about reducing criminals entering the country, but no **clearly-articulated** explanation about how kicking Masters degree research students, and Doctoral research students out of the country helps any other strategic policy initiative.

It's such a poor play by a country-- we've traditionally drawn the best and brightest young people (and some of the richer international kids) to our country to study in an effort to exert soft power. They will have long standing, emotionally driven ties to our nation if they spend some of their formative young-adult years here, if nothing else. What country wouldn't want that? Crazy we would want to endanger this easy goodwill in order to make dumb Americans feel better about themselves.

Reading Noem's letter, it sounds like a ton of these requests were from last month, and Harvard apparently failed to provide the information on students' behavior that would render foreign students inadmissable/removable. 

I'm sure there will be more information to come out, but that does sound like it would be in line with Harvard's stance here, I am curious to read about this more in depth, hopefully there is a report or something that comes out on this. They just recently published their report on the rampant antisemitism on campus, so I'd expect a similar level of thoroughness on the part of the government if they are taking this step.

This is a sharp move that I wasn't aware could be done.

Previous Presidents forced Universities and communities to stop discriminating, and to protect Americans, and the Presidents did so via the bayonet (see pics of the US military being sent to schools and communities).

Trump is being very moderate so far by using economic and legal means to fight various schools/cities' discriminatory practices. It's good to try that first.

If these means do not work, it's possible he'll have to go the route previous Presidents used.

I’m not sure how simply a change in president is leading people to not choose US schools.

This has always been the status quo for all visa holders.

Your visa can be revoked for any reason, most of the time it’s for advocating against the interests of your host country, or for being political, committing crimes, protesting, etc.

All you have to do is simply attend your university, don’t get political, don’t do anything stupid, get your degree and leave safely.

You cannot go to NYU Shanghai and start saying “Free Hong Kong”, you cannot go to a college in Spain and advocate for the Catalan Independence movement, you cannot go to a college in India and say “Kashmir is actually Pakistani territory”, you cannot go to an EU country and join in protests and be Anti-EU or Anti-government. 

This has always been the case, it’s just that seniors in high school do not understand adulthood and responsibility of traveling yet. A visa is a privilege, unless if you are a citizen, it is up to the country to to grant you permission to enter their territory, and they can revoke it for any reason, you have a weird tattoo? Revoked. What if your host country hates goth people? Revoked. It is designed to be an unfair system. 

If you travel anywhere, simply enjoy the experience, and leave. If you are going international to study, simply take your classes, get your degree, don’t get political or do anything dumb or anything against the government, their foreign policy, or their domestic policy.

These countries can demand you unlock your phone and other electronics or you get deported, unless if you are a citizen of that country. 

This is just how adulthood works, simply behave, and you’ll get the value of an international education.

Protests are one thing, but also cutting funding to NIH and HHS are another, removing diversity scholarships and programs that often benefit international students is also a reason. US already is more expensive a place to learn than other countries, however, this wasn't a concern for many top students due to earning potential which is curtailed by crackdown on H1B, stricter regulation on part time work, and loss of funding and scholarships for  international students.

Promise of paying 40k for a masters degree for them to not  be able to work in USA and go back home isn't  promising. Further for PhDs restriction of grants  for new and upcoming researchers means they cant even get career started.

I think its not just about the protests and visas being revoked but even students that have no involvement in anything and had minor incidents with law enforcement have their visa revoked, its just like trying to get any excuse to do so. Furthermore, employers are not as open for opt and visa sponsorship because of the uncertainty in regards to immigration policies and so they dont want to invest in an employee that might be there a year later

Never allow fear be the reason you change your plans. Don't allow fear to stop you from choosing the US. You can choose not to come to the US for different reasons based on your specific situation but it should never be fear based. Especially if you're coming in as a college freshman. There is a new administration every 4 to 8 years and, by the time you're graduating so many things could change. Fear driven decisions are often the wrong decisions.

Tertiary education in the US is insanely expensive and inaccessible to most people. Most people take on a lot of debt to go to college. It's not worth it.

I work in international education in a position abroad, though I am an American. Before the second Trump administration, the US was the premier destination for international students. The UK and Australia are also very attractive, but most of the students I've worked with prefer the US. The diversity of opportunities is simply greater. That is rapidly changing. 

People with the money to send their kids abroad, particularly when it comes to places like Southeast Asian countries, aren't stupid or ill-informed. I've already had inquiries about alternatives to the US because parents are afraid that their kids will end up being refused entry or arbitrarily deported partway through their studies. Or worse. There's also a cultural element. Students often return home at least once a year to spend time with family members, or family members to to visit them. Neither may be possible now.

American universities rely on a steady stream of international students who pay well. Without them, universities are going to have to tighten their belts. Some universities may also be concerned that international recruitment may make them the target of Trump's crusade against DEI. Even worse for all of us is that these highly skilled graduates often stay in the US after graduating and fill roles that there aren't enough qualified Americans to fill. That makes the US far less attractive for investors, who may look to places like the UK, Western Europe, China, Singapore, and Australia. 

In the long run, some American universities may be able to adapt by establishing international programs delivered abroad to generate some of the lost revenue. An example of this is the University of London's International Programmes, which are delivered all over the world. It still won't make up for the lost revenue or the vibrance having international students can bring to a campus, but it's something. 

American higher education is going to see a big drop in international student enrollment in the very near future. Trump is a catastrophe for higher education in may regards. I just hope it can be reversed to some extent when he is finally gone.

Hell with international students... think about tourists that are going to *entirely avoid* the US like the fucking plague.  Tourism is responsible for around 2 trillion dollars in revenue every year... expect to see that number drop *substantially*.

The US being a major economic power is *fucking over*, and there's legitimately no going back.

This year it might too late for a lot of international students, but next year it’s going hit us hard. I wouldn’t be surprised if that number drops by 1/2 by 2026.
